I’ll be using them again. They were on time, on budget and came up with no-nonsense solutions to the problems we encountered once we opened up the roof and walls. What we thought was a routine job became more complicated and they handled it beautifully.

The team showed up on time and accomplished the roof install and gutters in a very professional manner. The foreman, Scott, never failed to explain what was happening and kept me informed throughout the project. I’m very pleased with the results.

Is it time for a new roof?

There are definite signs to look for in determining if it is time for a new roof. If you can see cracked shingles, curling shingles, sheathing, shingle or siding decay, these visual cues suggest it is time to call a professional to take a look. Leaking in the attic after heavy rain, stains on the ceilings or walls, and blistering paint are also signs. If you notice the roofing granules in your gutters and downspouts or have high energy bills these are also clues as well.

Where to start?

First you want a professional to measure your roof, the amount of valleys, hips and other features of your roof to know the amount of material that will be needed. Call 401-268-7075 or simply email us info@PinnacleRoofingNE.com and we will take care of the measurements. Often homeowners do not need to be home for this to happen. Once we have the measurements it is time for an appointment to go over your options for shingles, underlayment and then schedule the date.  Most roofs can be stripped and have a new roof installed in one day with our skilled team of roofers!  Remember there is the option of financing if you would like.

Next:

You will need to decide on the material you want to use for your roof. Different materials will have different benefits and costs.

Most residential roofs have asphalt shingles on them.  There are several brands and styles to chose from when shingling your roof.

Three tab asphalt shingles

Three tab shingles are traditional shingles and come in a variety of colors.  These have shorter warranty lengths and are being replaced in favor of architectural shingles.

cedarshingle1

Architectural shingles

Architectural shingles have a large variety of colors styles and longer warranty lengths. These designer shingles have expanded in price and quality grades. Now, several varieties are comparable in price to three tab.

Please request a brochure to be emailed to you to help you chose your color and style of shingle.

Then: When the measurements have been taken and the type of shingle or material has been selected we will have the numbers ready to speak with you and give you your quote.  We have samples available to share with you if you would like to assist your decision process.

Flashing,  fascia, sheathing, rafters

Your home will be reviewed to see if there is flashing that needs to be replaced,  and see if there is any visual indicators of other issues such as rotting sheathing that may need to be replaced in areas or sags that indicate rafter repair may be needed.  In either case, we will take care and do it right when we install a new roof. This is a good time to inspect the fascia on your home as well.

Storm Proofing

We offer and highly recommend our storm proofing for your roof. We will add the ice and water barrier beyond what the code requires and place it over all your seams on your home. This added precaution will save you the time, money and stress from potential roof leaks down the road.

5/5 stars Roof Installation or Replacement Verified Review

What an experience we had for the last several months having the Team on our property. We hired them to put a metal roof on the building we were converting from a commercial office to a bed & breakfast on our farm. The price was right, so we hired them, only to later find out that they also wanted to bid on the entire renovation of the interior of the building.

We were taking bids from other contractors, and were met with pessimism and being told that they couldn’t complete this project the way we envisioned. Scott was the only one who saw what we were trying to do, and was enthusiastic and optimistic throughout the entire process. We hired them and work began immediately.

We dealt solely with Scott from beginning to end, and as I was personally handling the plumbing, I got to work alongside him and Jason for many months. We got to know each other, and it was an absolute pleasure having them around.

For most weeks, Scott and Jason worked 6 days a week, sometimes until late in the evening. They put up walls, turned a closet into a stunning bathroom, opened up a few walls to make the home flow nicely, and bring in more light with a sliding door that overlooks our pond.

When the weather finally warmed up, they got up onto the roof, stripped off 2 layers of rotting shingles, and then installed the gorgeous metal roof. The building is L shaped, and of course has a cupola, so this was not as easy as working with asphalt, and they handled every challenge to our satisfaction.

When it was time to begin finishing up, they put down floating flooring throughout the whole home, installed our new kitchen cabinets, trimmed down all doors to fit with the new flooring, and finished up all the new trim work.

We have worked with many contractors, and this was the best experience we have ever had. Scott is professional, hard working, polite, funny, and a pleasure to work with. The job took a little longer than originally planned, but he stayed through the end and I will recommend him to anyone.

This guest house is going to be an AirBnB on our farm, overlooking our pond, and it looks like a million dollars thanks to Scott and his team. There are no words to express how thankful we are. We will be hiring them again. Thank you Kelly’s Team!

How to estimate how much material will be needed.

Knowing how much material you need will help you have an estimate of what your new roof will cost.

Professionals refer to how many squares are in a roof.  A roofing square is 100 square foot area. There are usually three three tab bundles of shingle for every square on your roof.

To determine how many squares your roof is you multiply the length and width of each section of your roof. This will give you the square feet of each section. Add up the total of each sections and divide by 100.  Now add 15% to allow for waste.  This will be the amount of squares of material needed for your roof.

Now you will need to factor in the most of the drip edge, the cost of ice and water shield, the cost of the underlayment (roofing felt in most cases). There is also the metal flashing that is needed around pipes, chimneys, skylights and other fixtures on the roof.

Understanding the pitch or steepness of your roof, the height of the roof,  the number roof valleys, hips and levels of roofing will factor into material cost and labor cost as well.

Now that you know the measurement of your roof, understand the different factors will effect the material costs as well as labor costs you will need to take into consideration the material you select.

Siding Options

Siding Options

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl Siding House
Vinyl siding is by far the leader. Vinyl siding is attractive due to its combination of durability, color options, and low cost which make it attractive to the budget-conscious homeowner.

There are many different profiles of vinyl: horizontal and vertical panels, dutch lap, shakes, shingles, board n batten, beaded, and fish scales or scallops. Vinyl siding sits alone at the top and continues to be one of the best siding options available. Below are the pros and cons of vinyl siding:

PROS

  • Vinyl siding is durable and typically is under warranty for 30-40 years after installation
  • The color options of vinyl are endless, with hundreds of color palettes to choose from
  • It is versatile and can be textured like wood without the disadvantages of decay or termites
  • Simple and easy to clean, vinyl siding just needs a power hose and some water
  • Wide range of quality of the vinyl materials, you can even get insulated vinyl if you live in colder climates to increase energy efficiency.
  • Insulated vinyl siding has the potential to raise your energy efficiency R value from 2 – 5.5!
  • Finally, vinyl siding in probably the cheapest option when upgrading your exterior siding

CONS

  • Although it is water-resistant it is not waterproof. Poor installation can lead to water seeping behind the paneling which leads to mold and other issues
  • It is known to warp and bend under extreme weather conditions of both heat & cold
  • The color you choose is permanent. Unlike other siding that can be repainted different colors, vinyl siding color choice is here to stay.
  • Compared to something like brick siding; hail, baseballs, tree limbs, etc … can leave dents and gashes in the side of your home.

Wood Siding

Wood Siding
Everyone likes wood, this type of siding can add a natural & beautiful exterior to your house. The changing colors and tones of wood instantly make a home feel warm and inviting. There are several species of wood to choose from such as: spruce, pine, fir, cedar, and redwood.

Apart from the kind of wood you choose you will also have the choice of 4 different profiles: bevel (clapboard), shakes or shingles, board and batten, or engineered wood. This type of siding is particularly dominant in the west, and continues to be a top choice for homeowners with its classic & timeless look. Below are the pros and cons of wood siding:

PROS

  • Wood has the advantage of being easily replaced in small quantities if damaged. Other types of siding have to replace whole panels and sides
  • No question this is the most green siding you can find on the market.
  • Wood can be stained and painted in limitless colors, there are no bounds
  • Wood siding has a higher R-Value than most of ~.8 making it more energy efficient
  • It’s lightweight feature makes it faster and easier to be installed. Reducing overall labor cost and time

CONS

  • Can be stained/painted limitless colors, but this also is a drawback.  It must be maintained
  • Damage to wood can come from insects or water. Termites and other wood eating insects can wreak havoc on a home with wood siding
  • The cost of maintenance adds up: stained every 2-3 years, and repainted every 4-5 years
  • It’s not fire resistant which can play a factor in dry climate areas

Fiber Cement

courtesy james hardie
On the heels of vinyl siding, another popular siding option is fiber cement. This is a mixture of wood fibers, sand, and cement. It is built to mimic the look and feel of natural wood siding, with less hassle of maintenance, insects, and cost.

The most popular brand of fiber cement is James Hardie Siding Manufacturer from Australia. The interest of this type of siding has risen dramatically due to its durability and low-cost wood alternative. Fiber cement is often compared to vinyl. PROS

  • Get the look and feel of real wood without the high cost or susceptibility to wood insects
  • Fiber cement is extremely fire resistant with a class 1A fire rating
  • Not prone to rot or decay like wood as well as resistant to salty air for coastal areas
  • Easy to maintain and is guaranteed up front for 15 years not to fade or chip
  • Very versatile in its finish and texture offering many design and color options such as brick and stone textures

CONS

  • For DIY (self installation) the material is quite heavy requiring 2 people as well as special cutting tools
  • More costly than its synthetic cousin vinyl siding by 2-3 times as much.
  • Although not as often as wood, it does have to be repainted every 12-15 years.
  • Color is not all the way through the product like vinyl, so touch ups will be required for chips and damage
